Lowndes RSVP and Y team up for Health and Fitness Day

On Wednesday, May 25, Lowndes County seniors will join an estimated 100,000 seniors across the nation to help promote active, healthy lifestyle through physical fitness, good nutrition and preventive care as part of National Senior Health & Fitness Day®. As an official host site, the Y and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Lowndes County will hold activities at the Columbus Riverwalk.  

 

"Our activities will provide a wonderful opportunity for seniors to make, renew and revitalize their commitment to live healthier lives through better health and fitness. We are so pleased to partner with the YMCA of Lowndes County as we promote healthier living," says Jayne Reynolds, director, RSVP of Lowndes County. 

 

Sign-in for this free event, open to everyone, begins at 8 a.m., with the program starting at 8:30 a.m. and ending at 11:30 a.m. Included will be exercises such as Senior Stretch and Silver Sneakers (information available at the event), ending with Zumba® Gold, a slower version of the popular Zumba® exercise trend.  

 

At 10 a.m., participants will "walk" along the Riverwalk, at their own pace and distance. Health testing will be available by Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle, and other information will be available from Humana, Golden Triangle Planning and Development District, RSVP, Gentiva and the Y. 

 

"Older adults at all levels of physical fitness are encouraged to participate in National Senior Health &Fitness Day®," says Barbara Bigelow, community relations director at the Y. "Our goals for Senior Day are to make exercise fun, to increase awareness of the benefits of a regular exercise program for older adults and to encourage all older adults to take advantage of the many health and fitness programs offered in our community. It''s another way to help motivate our community into a healthier lifestyle." 

 

Senior Health &Fitness Day buttons will be available to the first to sign in, while supply lasts.
