Focusing on world religions and interfaith dialogue, the 2011-2012 International Series at Mississippi University for Women will include presentations on specific religions, films about religious conflict and cooperation, and an interfaith dialogue between local religious leaders. Events for the fall include:
- Sept. 19 — An introduction to Hinduism, with Dr. Ghanshaym Heda, MUW professor and longtime leader in the India Association of Memphis.
- Oct. 25 — A screening of the film “Fremont, U.S.A.,” which explores tensions between religious communities in a diverse city after a Muslim woman is murdered.
- Nov. 15 — An introduction to Zen Buddhism with Dr. Linda Campany, former Zen Buddhist monk.
Each event begins at 7 p.m. in Martin Hall, Room 220, on the MUW campus and is free and open to the public.
The feature event of the spring semester will be “Overcoming Violence: An Interfaith Conversation,” a panel dialogue to be held during World Interfaith Harmony Week in February.
Other events will include presentations on Judaism, Orthodox Christianity and Islam, as well as the film “Talking Peace,” which explores “living room” dialogue between Jews and Arabs.
The series is financially assisted by the National Endowment for the Humanities through the Mississippi Humanities Council. For more information, email Kim Whitehead at kwhitehead @as.muw.edu.
