It's raining men, hallelujah, it's raining men. Well, maybe not, but at least this season men are paying more attention to a beauty routine all their own.
Some might think it vain or silly for men to ponder skin creams or pomades for the hair, but why the heck not? More and more men are popping up at cosmetics counters and booking regular pumpkin mask facials at the spa. I think it's glorious when a man has the courage and confidence to pay attention to the details, even when those details are beauty-oriented in nature.
Nowadays it's common for men to opt for a manicure and even a clear topcoat while getting cropped at the salon. It's more "normal" than ever before to see a guy getting his brows shaped, opting for Botox, and even signing on for a bit of hair color between the office and the gym. I think it's about darn time!
More and more men are getting in line for professional teeth whitening, mini-face lifts, and personal trainers, all in a quest to look hotter than last year. With metrosexuals such as Anderson Cooper, George Clooney and Mario Lopez leading the way for us, it is more mainstream than once upon a time.
My daddy back in the day would never in a million years have stepped into a beauty salon, much less a tanning parlor for a spray tan. Nonetheless, times are changing when just two years ago, at the ripe age of 72, my macho, cowboy-boots-wearing daddy got an eyelift. I'm still in disbelief, but it's a new season -- and men are no less manly for pulling out all the stops to look handsome.
On the shelves
Manufacturers are catering to a male clientele with packaging without pastels, flowers and ribbons, opting for a sleeker, classic design. Most have personalized gender-specific products devoted to, you guessed it, the guys. The containers are usually white, black or grey with wording geared toward men, words like "clean" for shampoo and "glue" for gel. The fragrance and aromas remind one more of a fresh shower or spicy aftershave, not to be perceived as feminine.
Some men are even abandoning their bar of soap for collections that include foaming cleansers, peppermint exfoliating scrubs, astringents and, yes, even tinted moisturizers. In 2012, eye creams are as popular as football for aging men everywhere. Well, perhaps that's a bit of a stretch.
So don't be surprised. Be delighted when you pull out a drawer or swing open a mirrored vanity to reveal an arsenal of beauty products stashed away by your man, because after all, being beautiful isn't just for sissies.
