Not since Mia Farrow, Audrey Hepburn and Twiggy has the pixie haircut been more the rage than it is now. All the hype leading up to "Les Miserables" did not disappoint with stylized cinematography, the genius score that could only come from the epic musical and marvelous costumes. With a cast of big name stars, it was indeed Anne Hathaway who shined the brightest with her portrayal of Fantine.
I won't spoil the plot for those who are still to be entertained, or shall I say blown away, by "Les Miz," but let's just say it was a desperate time when Fantine was forced to sell her beautiful long hair. True to her art and craft as an actor extraordinaire in what rightfully is her next Oscar nomination, Anne Hathaway said "no" to theatrical wigs. When it came time for the character to lose her hair, this star sacrificed her own hair.
Perhaps she was clairvoyant and knew the birth of her new pixie would be spring's hot trend.
You don't have to possess Anne Hathaway's confidence or even Fantine's courage to chop last year's locks into this year's sensation. All that's needed is a salon appointment, some styling finesse and a bit of inspiration. Let's borrow that inspiration from Anne Hathaway who keeps her fringed coif effortless, carefree and feminine.
It's up to you to get some alone time with the best stylist in your town. Ask around and find out who is at the top of his or her game at doing short, edgy cuts with a modern energy, and keep in mind that it's not as easy as it looks.
Next, invite uneven layers, exaggerated pieces and disheveled bangs when talking to your stylist. Before you know it, you will be walking out of the salon with a liberating new pixie worthy of a star -- you!
Remember that every pixie is not created the same. Embrace your own hair's natural texture when trying on the season's blockbuster haircut. Whether your hair is board straight, somewhat wavy or super curly, it's up to you and your stylist to find the length, shape and style that's Oscar-worthy for you.
If you are afraid of flipping the switch from long to short, grab a friend and spend an hour trying on wigs. I caution you to refrain from a boring short cut by stepping outside the box when it comes to styling. In fact, throw the box away. The pixie is by definition avant garde and devil-may-care. It can be loud or quiet with just a bit of coaxing, but it should never be dull.
Run your fingers through it for a "lived in" vibe, or go sleek to one side, tucking behind the ear for a more elegant approach. Just go for it. You might not win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, but who knows, you might get something even better -- a fabulous new you!
