A community-wide one-day Bridges Out of Poverty training event set for Feb. 22 will shed light on the realities of poverty and ways citizens in impoverished communities can be helped.
Starkville Bridges will host the workshop to be presented by Jodi Pfarr, an instructor for the National Bridges Out of Poverty program, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Starkville Sportsplex at 405 Lynn Lane.
The educational session is designed for employers, community organizations, social service agencies and individuals to understand what organizers say are the “truths about poverty and the hidden rules among each class.” The training offers insight into bridging divides among socio-economic lines and provides tools and a common language to help those who want to assist others in need of help.
Starkville Bridges is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to eradicating poverty in Oktibbeha County. Starkville Bridges works to break down existing paradigms about poverty and seeks to provide education and resources to people in poverty to transition into the middle class.
“Our community is taking ‘poverty eradication’ to the next level. So many people have asked for an opportunity to learn how the Bridges initiative differs; this is the chance to have an ‘aha’ moment and learn the truth about poverty,” said Lynn Phillips-Gaines, SBOP president.
Cost of the training event is $50, which includes a workbook, lunch and refreshments.
