Mississippi State University is offering four different conservation camps in June and July for young people interested in science, outdoors and the environment.
The camps are offered through MSU’s Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Aquaculture and the Extension Service.
■ The Conservation Camp: Natural Resources Edition June 9-13 will give young people aged 14 to 18 the chance to learn about ecology, science, techniques and careers associated with managing and conserving Mississippi’s wildlife, fish and forests. The five-day, four-night residential camp costs $300 to attend, but siblings can attend at a reduced rate.
■ The Conservation Camp: Outdoor Recreation and Science Edition June 23-27 immerses participants in archery, canoeing, skeet shooting and other outdoor experiences. Campers can get certified in Hunter’s Education and Boater Safety and learn about Mississippi’s diverse wildlife in this five-day, four-night residential camp. The camp is designed for 12- to 16-year-olds and costs $300 to attend. Additional siblings can register at a reduced rate.
■ The July 7-11 Conservation Camp: Extreme Science Edition is a five-day, four-night residential camp that gives 14- to 18-year-olds a sneak peak at college science courses. Topics may include soils, mammalogy, ornithology, forest ecology and wildlife pathology. The $300 fee is reduced for siblings attending the same camp.
■ Conservation Camp: Day Camp Edition for rising sixth, seventh and eighth graders is offered July 22-26. This camp is held at MSU each day from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and costs $20 per person. Students learn about the state’s natural ecosystems, experience real-world science and explore the outdoors. To apply, each student must write a paragraph of at least 100 words expressing his or her interest in the experience and send it to Leslie Burger, director of the camps.
With the exception of the day camp, each of these hands-on camps can accommodate up to 28 people. Financial assistance is available in some instances. Register online or learn more about each of these camps at cfr.msstate.edu/wildlife/conservation_camp.
Contact Laura Andrews at 662-325-6694 or [email protected] with questions about registration, or learn more camp details by contacting Burger at 662-325-6686 or [email protected].
