JACKSON -- The Starkville Area Arts Council has been awarded a $18,000 general operating grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC). This grant is a portion of the $1.27 million in grants the Commission will award in 2013-2014 and will be used to provide quality arts programs such as the Cotton District Arts Festival, Everything Garden Expo and the Magnolia Film Festival in the Starkville area. The grants are made possible by continued funding from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
"The creative economy has never been more vibrant than it is today in the communities across Mississippi," stated Sallye Killebrew, Interim executive director at MAC. "This agency is honored to play a small role in assisting these organizations to continue their work of reinforcing the value of the arts and the role they play in creative place-making and economic development."
The Starkville Area Arts Council's (SAAC) mission is "to promote the essential value of the arts (music, dance, theatre, literature, the visual arts) for the culture, educational, social, ethnic and economic vitality of the Starkville area." The mission is fulfilled through community development programs, promotion of local artists via Art in Public Places and Art in the Garden and encouraging youth to ensure the future of the arts with Art Partners, student art competitions, scholarships and education grants.
The Mississippi Arts Commission, a state agency, serves the residents of the state by providing grants that support programs to enhance communities; assist artists and arts organizations; promote the arts in education and celebrate Mississippi's cultural heritage.
