Local animal rescue group awarded grant

Special to The Dispatch

The Columbus-based Shaw Pit Bull Rescue Inc. has been awarded a $1,500 grant from The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The funds will be used towards the care and housing for the 30 dogs in SPBR's care as a result of the Montpelier hoarding case in June of this year.

"Shaw Pit Bull Rescue is so very thankful to the ASPCA for this generous grant award," said Aimee Shaw, president of Shaw Pit Bull Rescue. Six additional welded wire kennels had to be purchased to house these dogs, and this grant will help cove that cost."

In late June, Animal Control officers from Columbus and Starkville, along with Clay County deputies, Golden Triangle Horse Rescue, Shaw Pit Bull Rescue, and Aberdeen and Starkville humane societies assisted in the seizure of five horses, 23 pit bull dogs, and four other dogs that were living in horrible conditions. Most of the dogs were severely flea infested and thin, and some were very emaciated.
