The Columbus Christmas parade will welcome some new four-footed entries this year. Main Street Columbus Executive Director Barbara Bigelow has announced that a hitch of the iconic Anheuser-Busch Clydesdales will be part of the parade set for Saturday, Dec. 14 at 5:30 p.m. The original published date was Dec. 2.
The huge, powerful draft horses have become Super Bowl and Internet stars. When fully mature, each Clydesdale to make the teams will weigh between 1,800 and 2,300 pounds, stand 72 inches at the withers (highest point of the shoulder), have a bay coat (brown with black mane and tail), four white legs and a white blaze. The breed that takes its name from the Clydesdale region of Scotland where it originated has been part of Anheuser-Busch marketing since 1933.
"We're so very excited to be able to have the Clydesdales in our parade," said Bigelow. "This will be such an added attraction on that special night."
Another innovation to the 2013 event is an art contest to select six junior grand marshals to help lead the parade. Children in kindergarten through fifth grade are invited to fill out an application available at columbusmainstreet.com and submit their artwork fitting the parade theme, "Candy Canes and Christmas Carols."
Shannon Bowen is chair of the Holiday Art Contest.
"We think this is a great opportunity to display the artistic talents of K-5 children in Columbus and Lowndes County schools and get everyone in the holiday spirit in time for the Christmas parade."
Cash prizes will be awarded to first and second place winners in three grade categories, K-first grade, second-third grade, and fourth-fifth grade. First places win $50; second places win $25. Deadline to enter is 5 p.m. Nov. 12.
The public is invited to make nominations for the parade's adult grand marshal. Send your submission for someone 18 or older to firstname.lastname@example.org by Nov. 1, and provide brief information about what that person has given to the community.
