David Allan Coe has spent a career pushing the proverbial envelope. As each new generation of “rednecks, kickers, pickers, preppies, skinheads, Deadheads, hippies and bikers” showed up to hear him, his reputation as one of country”s outlaws grew.
Coe and his band will bring their live show to The Princess Theater, 217 Fifth St. S., on Thursday, Oct. 8.
“We hope this is the beginning of more nationally-recognized music coming to town,” said Bryan Roberts, co-owner of the Princess. “Depending on response and how well the community gets involved, this is something we”d like to do every few months.”
Some of Coe”s best-known songs have been “You Never Even Called Me by My Name,” “The Ride,” “Would You Lay With Me” and “Take This Job and Shove It.” Firm fans know him from Farm Aid, touring with Neil Young, Willie Nelson and Kid Rock.
What some may not realize is the long-haired country boy has put out 26s albums, with more than 60 songs hitting the Billboard singles chart during his decades in the industry. He”s written songs for Nelson, Leon Russell, Charlie Louvin, The Oak Ridge Boys, Kid Rock and George Jones, to name a few. Johnny Cash recorded his “Would You Lay with Me.”
The sometimes-controversial Coe has also appeared in movies including “The Last Days of Frank and Jesse James,” “Lady Grey,” “Stagecoach” and “Buckstone County Prison.”
Country Music magazine once termed him ” … One of the most singularly fascinating and enigmatic figures to carve a niche in ”70s and ”80s country music.”
Tickets for Coe”s show are $20, through Oct. 7, and $25 on the day of the show. They may be purchased at The Princess or by calling the ticket hotline at 662-549-9260. Doors open at 7 p.m.; live music will begin at 8 p.m., with Coe to follow opening bands.
“We have a limited number of VIP tickets at $50 left,” said Roberts. “We”re just about sold out of those. All other tickets are general admission.”
