Timeless advice from Coco Chanel

David Creel

Shanna Head is a lively, youthful spirit with a contagious laugh who fills any room with fun. So when she got spring fever, I did, too! Through several seasons, Shanna has worn her hair long, and much to my surprise she confessed she never had highlights, ever. Together we have babied her long tresses with frequent trims, conditioning masques, layers and bangs, but no more.

By spring fever, I mean we flipped the switch on her waist-length mane, chopped it off and painted on some face-framing blonde color for a bit of drama. We have a good rapport, and that's essential with your "mane man" or woman when you are entrusting that person with your hair. After all, in about 15 minutes a hair stylist can change your self-esteem for the next six months, and not always for the better.

After flipping through several magazines -- Vogue, Elle, Harper's Bazaar -- we decided on a modern shag, blunt in the back, exaggerated fringe in the front. With the fashion world currently giving a nod to the '60's, we defined the cut with a retro, deep side bang that is right on trend. The color was revved up with bright highlights painted around the face which always open up the eyes and illuminate the skin.

Spring has sprung, and Shanna, much like the yellow buttercups in my garden, is popping up gorgeously everywhere. She even came back with her beautiful sister for a modern shag all her own. Coco Chanel said it best: "A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous." Enough said.
