The Lowndes County School District is among 59 Mississippi school districts recognized by the Mississippi School Boards Association (MSBA) on Nov. 11 with an award for outstanding student achievement, based on student performance last spring on testing requirements in the Mississippi accountability program. Lowndes County School District board members were on hand for a special awards luncheon and honored with the other 35 school districts in the Lantern category of the MSBA Lighthouse School Leader awards.
The Lantern Award recognizes school districts that have an overall grade of B, and no schools below C, based on State Accountability Standards administered by the Mississippi Department of Education. The MSBA Lighthouse School Leader Awards Program was established by the Mississippi School Boards Association at the beginning of the 2003-04 school year, in recognition of the unsung efforts of school districts to meet more rigorous state and federal accountability standards.
