Mississippi University for Women’s 2015 International Series will focus on Spain, featuring speakers on Spanish language and culture, a flamenco demonstration and workshop, and a lecture-recital on Spanish guitar. All events begin at 7 p.m. on the MUW campus.
The Series begins in Martin Hall on Monday, Feb. 9 with “When Speaking of Spanish, Expect the Unexpected,” in which MUW instructor of Spanish Erinn Holloway and recently retired professor of Spanish Dr. Michael Longton will explore linguistic diversity in Spain.
On Tuesday, Feb. 24 in Cochran Hall will be a flamenco performance and workshop led by Helena Longmire, a native of Spain and long-time resident of the Golden Triangle.
On Tuesday, March 17 in Poindexter Hall, Dr. Michael Boyd will present the lecture-recital “A History of the Guitar in Spain and Cultural Development Through the 20th Century.” Currently professor of guitar at Jones County Junior College, Boyd has garnered top honors at numerous festivals and competitions and has released several recordings from Centaur Records, most recently including previously unrecorded works by Spanish composer Federico Moreno Torroba.
Finally, on Monday, April 13 in Martin Hall, Dr. Blanca Simmons-Diez, MUW instructor of biology and former resident of Madrid, will present “Off the Beaten Track in Madrid,” discussing how visitors can experience the city the way its residents do.
The Series is cosponsored by MUW’s Department of Languages, Literature and Philosophy and College of Nursing and Speech Language Pathology.
