Cherished by readers both young and old, the story about the cat in the tall red and white striped hat will come to life on stage at Mississippi University for Women Thursday, Feb. 26. The performance is set for 7 p.m. in Rent Auditorium, Whitfield Hall.
“The Cat in the Hat” is the story of a boy and girl who are home alone on a rainy day. While their mother is away, a large cat appears, who is ready to entertain the pair along with his friends Thing One and Thing Two, who create havoc around the house.
“This stage adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ “The Cat in the Hat” was created by the National Theatre of Great Britain a few years ago and has subsequently become a very popular production worldwide. The play is true to the original book in its look, style and spirit. It is 40 minutes of pure energy, fun, and, of course, rhymes,” said William “Peppy” Biddy, who is professor of theatre and director of graduate studies at The W.
Cast members include Graham Young as Cat, Chris Ambrose as Fish, Gavin Mendus as Boy, Karen Thead as Sally, Allison Jones as Thing 1, Abi Wiggins as Thing 2, Candice Lee Monteith as Kitten 1, Sau’dai Jackson as Kitten 2 and Ryan Savage as Kitten 3.
In addition, Alison Miller will serve as stage manager, Jonathan Best as sound engineer, Katie Welch as assistant stage manager, Gabriel Lestrade as sound technician, Ray Sizemore as lighting designer, Leah Thompson as costume designer, Parker Yarbrough as props master and Kevin Barkman as master electrician. David Carter, associate professor and chair of the Department of Theatre, is the technical director.
