Around this time of year people begin planning for warmer months ahead and for luscious gardens of tomatoes, squash, peppers, eggplants and numerous other varieties of summer veggies.
The Lowndes County Master Gardeners have also begun planning for their annual 2015 spring and summer projects. They will host several educational events for the public. The first is a gardening program set for Tuesday, March 3 at 6:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 318 College St., in downtown Columbus. Dr. David Nagel, an MSU Extension vegetable specialist, will discuss vegetable gardening and feeding a family of four from a 50-by-50-foot garden. The program will include light hors d’oeuvres as well as numerous door prizes for gardeners of all kinds.
“Now is the time to start planning,” said Reid Nevins, agricultural Extension agent serving Lowndes County with Mississippi State University’s Extension Service. “While cooped up in the house on these cold winter days, you can order seeds and start transplants or mend and sharpen garden tools so they will be ready for the upcoming warm weather of spring.”
