The Starkville Area Arts Council hosts an opening reception for an exhibition of works by Robin Whitfield at the Greater Starkville Development Partnership at 200 Main St. in downtown Starkville Thursday from 5:30-7 p.m. The show will remain on display through May 11.
Whitfield, of Grenada, will be the juror for this year’s Cotton District Arts Festival Juried Show in Starkville April 18.
The artist works in the rivers, swamps and forests near her downtown studio and around the state. Her work explores relationships of form and color as well as ecological elements. Discovering and sharing the beauty of nature and biodiversity is a driving force in her creative life. Whitfield works on cotton paper with traditional watercolors and pigments gathered from the earth.
A graduate of Delta State University with a BFA in painting, Whitfield has been on the Mississippi Arts Commission Roster since 2006. She has been an artist-in-residence for ArtPlace Mississippi since 2002 and an Audubon Master Naturalist of Mississippi since 2007. Her artworks and illustrations have been featured in numerous publications including “Words On Nature: a collection of writings by Eudora Welty,” edited by Patti Carr-Black. Whitfield was selected to be the Artist-In Residence at Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge for the fall of 2014.
The public is invited to meet the artist at the reception March 26. Refreshments will be served. Dulcimer music will be performed by Donna and Richard Switzer.
