The Columbus-Lowndes Public Library System (CLPL) joins libraries in schools, campuses and communities nationwide in celebrating National Library Week April 12-18. It is a time to highlight the changing role of libraries, librarians and library workers.
Libraries today are more than warehouses for books. Libraries and librarians are change agents within their communities, transforming lives through innovative educational resources and forward-thinking programming. Libraries are doing their part to close the digital divide and level the playing field by providing free access to information and technologies that many in their communities would be hard-pressed to find elsewhere.
“Today’s libraries are the gateway to a world of possibilities,” said Erin Busbea, CLPL director. “No matter what you’re looking for, whether it’s e-books, job-seeking opportunities and resources or innovative programming, the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library System has it.”
The system serves communities in Lowndes County by providing access to print and e-books, story times for children, free technology classes and much more. Services are provided regardless of race, ethnicity, creed, age, ability, sexual orientation, gender identity or socio-economic status.
Throughout the week
The library system is celebrating with several events for the public.
Food for fines
The library will also conduct some week-long events. “Food for Fines” begins Monday, April 13. Non-perishable food items will be accepted as payment on fines and fees. For every two food items given, up to $5 will be waived from fines and fees on an account. There is a limit of four items (or $10) per account. Check at the Circulation Desk for details.
1,000 books
The library launches its “1,000 Books before Kindergarten” program. The goal is to read 1,000 books before starting kindergarten. For every 100 books read, participating children will receive a prize. After reaching 1,000 books, participating children will receive a prize from the library treasure chest, a free book, and an invitation to the program’s annual graduation party.
First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April.
