The Columbus Choral Society offers a “treat for moms” Sunday — a Mother’s Day concert showcasing not only music, but poetry and anecdotes as well.
The hour-long concert begins at 2 p.m. at the Columbus Arts Council’s Rosenzweig Arts Center at 501 Main St. in downtown Columbus. Admission is $5.
A similar event in May 2014 was so well received, the choral group decided to present an encore.
“We will treat moms to all sorts of beautiful and funny music,” said Choral Society Director Alisa Toy. “She is sure to feel like a queen after it is all over with. The whole family will enjoy it.”
Member Heather Schmitt has helped coordinate the blend of music and spoken word for the event.
“We wanted to honor mothers and show them how appreciative we are of what they do and the sacrifices they make for their families,” said Schmitt, an Atlanta native who joined the group in the fall of 2014.
The program will be alternately light-hearted and serious, and will span several different genres.
“It’s touching, it’s funny, it’ll be a litte bit of everything,” said Schmitt.
Raffle tickets for a handmade quilt displayed at the concert will be available.
A reception follows the program.
The Choral Society, joined by visiting singers and the Starkville-MSU Symphony Orchestra, presented “Chronicles of Blue and Gray” March 28 in Columbus, with composer John Purifoy of Knoxville, Tennesse, in attendance. Several local group members performed Purifoy’s work with a larger company at New York City’s Carnegie Hall in June 2014.
