The Friends of the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library and the Tennessee Williams Tribute welcome Dr. Milly S. Barranger, guest speaker at the Sept. 9 Table Talk. Barranger, this year’s recipient of the Tribute’s fourth Tennessee Williams Distinguished Scholar’s Medal, will analyze the critical and far-reaching impact of “Three Behind-the-Scenes Women in the Career of Tennessee Williams.”
“Our collaboration with the Tennessee Williams Tribute is now in its sixth year,” noted Friends member Jo Shumake. “This partnership has been very rewarding, and we are excited to host yet another distinguished and thought-provoking scholar.”
An author, lecturer, educator and producer, Barranger currently lives in New York City where she writes books about women and the modern American theater and its playwrights. She is a Distinguished Professor Emerita of Dramatic Art at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and past Dean of the College of Fellows of the American Theatre. She holds a Master of Arts degree in English and a doctoral degree in Theatre from Tulane University, where she served for 12 years as chair of the Theatre Department.
Barranger has written several popular go-to textbooks, including “Theatre: Past and Present,” “Understanding Plays” and “Theatre: A Way of Seeing.” As an expert on this vibrant form of collaborative artistic expression, she is well-placed to discuss the importance of Williams in American and world theater.
“We all know that Tennessee Williams created some of the theater world’s most famous female characters,” said Shumake. “What will be fascinating is an opportunity to hear about the women who influenced his life and career.”
Table Talks are presented on Wednesdays in September at the library at 314 Seventh St. N. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. for those wishing to bring their lunch and socialize before the program begins at noon, or enjoy the Tennessee Williams memorabilia collection of posters, playbills and photos located on the library’s first floor. The Friends will serve iced tea.
