Katelyn Jackson of Starkville was accepted into the Gateways to the Laboratory Program to participate in 10-weeks of research at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, New York. Since June she has been researching with Dr. Christopher Mason and a team of researchers on MetaSUB (Metagenomics and Metadesign of Subways and Urban Biomes), mapping the urban metagenome of more than 70 cities, 40 countries and all seven continents. This weekend, she made a presentation to other undergraduate researchers at the Leadership Alliance National Symposium in Hartford, Connecticut. She graduates from the Gateways Program Aug. 8. Jackson has been invited to the MetaSUB Conference in Sao Paulo, Brazil, next summer.
Jackson is a graduate of Starkville High School and Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science, and is a sophomore in the Shackouls Honors College at Mississippi State University majoring in biology/pre-med. She has worked in the research lab at MSU with Dr. Justin Thorton since her senior year in high school.
Jackson is the daughter of the Rev. Dr. Embra and Rosia Jackson of Starkville.
