When Sharon Patrick became a Mississippi State University Extension Service Agent, her goal was to make sure all Lowndes County youth ages 5 to 18 were aware of 4-H and all it offered. One way she and co-organizers are spreading the word about the youth development program fostering leadership, citizenship and life skills is with an Extension Service 4-H Fun Day Wednesday, June 27. It’s free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., kids, families and youth groups are invited out to the Lowndes County Extension Service facility at 485 Tom Rose Road, near the Highway 82 and Highway 45 South interchange west of Columbus.
Archery, ATV safety, robotics, gardening, money matters, crafts, science experiments, sports fishing, photography, a petting zoo and more will be on display. Participants are encouraged to sample activities from “growing a green thumb” to target-casting a fishing line.
“We’ve planned a fun-filled day to showcase some of the many projects 4-H offers,” said Patrick. “This is designed to let youth and families know about hands-on learning opportunities 4-H can provide.”
The event, she added, is also for caring adults who are interested in becoming a 4-H volunteer, willing to share their expertise with youth.
4-H member Hunter Brooks, 16, said, “My experience has been amazing over the past four years I’ve been a 4-H’er. It’s a great organization to participate in because you can strengthen life skills and get involved in projects you have a passion for. They range from shooting sports to modeling. Come out June 27 and find a project you’re interested in!”
