Dr. Kim Whitehead, of Mississippi University for Women''s Department of Languages, Literature and Philosophy, will be the guest speaker at the Sept. 22 Friends of the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library''s discussion of Mississippi authors.

The noon program in the library meeting room, 314 Seventh St. N., focuses on Richard Wright, who is widely recognized as one of the state''s greatest 20th-century writers.

Wright was the featured author in the inaugural "Mississippi Reads" campaign in 2008, the centennial of his birth.

"He was also the subject of conferences and festivals around the world," said Whitehead. "His novel, ''Native Son,'' is his most famous work. But his earlier collection of stories, ''Uncle Tom''s Children,'' holds a special place in our state''s literary history, as it explores the daily trials of African-Americans trying to wrest a living from the Mississippi soil and resist the Jim Crow system."

Doors open at 11:30 a.m. for those wishing to bring their lunch and socialize before the program begins at noon. The Friends will serve iced tea.

Table Talk will be presented each Wednesday in September. For more information on the series, contact the Friends at book.talk@hotmail.com
