STARKVILLE - The Mississippi State University men's basketball program announced Tuesday freshman wing player Fred Thomas has become eligible for the 2012-13 season.
The three-star prospect from Jim Hill High School in Jackson, who was signed by former MSU head coach Rick Stansbury during the early period of last year, finished his summer coursework and was cleared for participation by the NCAA Eligibility Center Tuesday.
The clearance notification allowed Thomas to officially enroll in classes Tuesday and makes him able to participate in offseason workouts with coaches.
Thomas, who is a 6-foot-5 player that can spend time at the shooting guard and small forward position this season, averaged 19.9 points and 5.9 rebounds per game as a senior at Jim Hill.
"This is his last week of that, so once he finishes up summer school then we'll have a definitive answer as far as how he did in that particular class he's taking," Mississippi State head coach Rick Ray said on Aug. 8. "As far as our other guys here at Mississippi State, there are not academic issues at all."
