STARKVILLE — The Starkville Board of Aldermen Tuesday is scheduled to interview four candidates for a seat on the Starkville School District”s board of trustees.
The board will interview Doug Bedsaul, Eric Heiselt, Alfreda Outlaw and Juliette Weaver-Reese.
Bedsaul is general manager of Hollywood Premiere Cinemas and is a Taekwondo instructor at The Starkville Martial Arts Academy on South Lafayette Street.
Outlaw works as an alcohol and drug coordinator for the Mississippi Department of Corrections and wants to implement mandatory drug and alcohol programs in the SSD, beginning in kindergarten.
Heiselt is a longtime middle school and high school teacher, while Weaver-Reese is a local entrepreneur.
The interviews will take place at 4:30 p.m. in City Hall, prior to the start of the Board of Aldermen meeting at 5:30 p.m.
Aldermen Tuesday also will consider whether to hold another round of public hearings for possible amendments to the city”s sidewalk ordinance.
Starkville”s transportation committee has proposed amendments which would allow developers to apply for variances from city sidewalk requirements if construction of those sidewalks causes an undue financial hardship.
The transportation committee would meet quarterly to review and document the average unit price for sidewalk construction for the purposes of establishing a standard metric against which to measure proposed construction costs. These unit prices would be determined based on quarterly posted construction bid averages, as provided by the Mississippi Department of Transportation and consultation with the city engineer.
The city”s Board of Adjustments and Appeals would determine an undue financial hardship exists only if the estimated cost of sidewalk construction, per linear foot, is more than twice the average rate as documented by the transportation committee.
Aldermen in January approved amendments to the sidewalk ordinance which exempted Pollard Road, Miley Drive and portions of Airport Road and Industrial Park Road from sidewalk construction requirements, but Mayor Parker Wiseman vetoed the amendments, saying he wanted to give the transportation committee more time to devise a variance process. The board Tuesday will vote on whether or not to hold a public hearing March 1 to discuss the proposed variance process.
In other business Tuesday, aldermen will consider a final hotel plat for a property at 982 Highway 12 E., where a La Quinta Inn and Suites is proposed, and a condominium plat for a portion of the former Borden milk plant. Starkville”s planning and zoning commission approved both plats Tuesday night.
