Longtime Oktibbeha County Circuit Clerk Angie McGinnis announced Tuesday she is not running for reelection.
McGinnis, who has been in office for 22 years, will remain on the job until Jan. 1, 2012. She hasn”t decided what she”ll do after her term expires.
“Whatever door opens for me, that”s what I”ll explore,” McGinnis said.
Three other candidates – Democrats Dave Holley and Debra Prisock Wood, and Republican Glenn Hamilton – qualified this week to fill McGinnis” seat. Potential candidates have until March 1 to qualify for the coming county elections.
Only one other candidate qualified this week. Jessie Oden will face Sheriff Dolph Bryan, who has been in office since 1976 and is vying for reelection, along with fellow challengers Steve Gladney and Charles Sanders. All four candidates in the sheriff”s race are Democrats.
As of Tuesday afternoon, 41 people had qualified in Oktibbeha County.
In the race to fill the District 1 constable seat left vacant by Constable Jimmy Shurden, who is not running for reelection due to illness, five candidates have qualified. Democrats William Ford, Curtis White and Joe Morse are in the race, along with Republicans Shank Phelps and Tom Roberson.
District 2 Constable Curtis Randle, a Democrat, is running for reelection and has one challenger so far in Republican Tim Cook. District 3 Constable James Lindsey, a Democrat, is running for reelection unopposed, as of Tuesday.
District 1 Justice Court Judge William “Tony” Boykin and District 2 Justice Court Judge W. Bernard Crump, both Democrats, are running unopposed for reelection, while District 3 Judge Jim Mills, a Democrat, has one challenger in Republican Buddy Johnston.
Tax Assessor/Collector Pat Kight has not qualified to run for reelection, but four candidates are vying to fill her seat in Republican Allen Morgan and Democrats Debbie Carrithers, Velisia “Lisa” Wynn and JoHelen “Joey” Walker.
All five members of the county”s Board of Supervisors are running for reelection.
District 1 Supervisor Carl Clardy, a Democrat, has three Republican challengers so far in Willie L. Thompson, John Prate Montgomery Jr. and Ed Whitehurst Jr.
Democratic District 2 Supervisor Orlando Trainer has one challenger in Democrat Tremell Sherman, while District 3 Supervisor Marvell Howard, a Democrat, is being challenged by Republicans Benny Perkins and Dennis Daniels Jr.
District 4 Supervisor Daniel Jackson, a Democrat, is running for reelection against Republican Bricklee Miller, while Democratic District 5 Supervisor John Young is facing fellow Democrats Sheila Lane and Leonardo Thompson.
Running unopposed for reelection, as of Tuesday, is Chancery Clerk Monica Banks, county prosecutor Roy E. Carpenter Jr., county schools Superintendent James Covington Jr. and Coroner Michael Hunt.
