A slew of new candidates have emerged in the final days and hours of qualifying for county elections.
Democrat Jessie “Bone” Oden and Republican Rudy Johnson have thrown their names in the hat to challenge Sheriff Dolph Bryan, a Democrat. Charles Sanders and Steve Gladney will also appear on the Democratic ballot.
Republican Billy L. Miller has signed up to face previously unopposed Coroner Michael Hunt, a Democrat.
Five candidates have stepped forward to seek the Circuit Clerk position soon to be vacated by Angie McGinnis, who is not seeking re-election.
Debra Prisock Wood, Dave Holley, Teresa Davis-Roberson and Dorothy Isaac have qualified as Democrats. Glenn Hamilton has qualified as a Republican.
No new candidates have qualified to replace Tax Assessor Pat Kight, who also is not seeking Re-election.
Previous qualifiers include Democrats Deborah Carrithers, Velisia “Lisa” Wynn and JoHelen “Joey” Walker and Republican Allen Morgan.
Democrats Donald Nash, Sudduth and Alander Neal and Republican Jim Scrivner all qualified to challenge for Democrat Carl Clardy”s District 1 Supervisor seat. Republicans Willie L. Thompson Jr., John Prate Montgomery Jr. and Ed Whitehurst Jr. previously qualified.
Republican Robert “Bubba” Gray qualified to face the winner of the Democratic primary between incumbent District 2 Supervisor Orlando Trainer, Alfreda Outlaw and Tremell O. Sherman.
Incumbent District 3 Supervisor Marvell Howard, a Democrat, will face Republicans Dennis Daniels and Bennye L. Perkins.
The field for District 4 Supervisor includes incumbent Democrat Daniel Jackson and Republican challenger Bricklee Miller.
Newcomers to the all-Democrat District 5 Supervisor race include Rahman Ali, Randolph “Coach” Brooks, Sammie Beckum and Joe L. Williams. Previous qualifiers include incumbent John Young, Shelia Lane and Keith Thompson.
District 3 Justice Court Judge incumbent Democrat Jim Mills will face Republican challenger Buddy Johnson.
In the wake of District 1 Constable Jimmy Shurden”s decision not to seek re-election due to illness Republican David Starsky and Democrat Freddie Bardley have joined the race. Democrats Curtis White, William H. Ford and Joe Morse previously qualified, as did Republicans Shank Phelps and Tom Roberson.
District 2 Constable incumbent Democrat Curtis D. Randle is opposed by Democrat Tim Cook.
County Attorney Roy E. Carpenter Jr., Chancery Clerk Monica Banks, District 1 Justice Court Judge William “Tony” Boykin, District 2 Justice Court Judge W. Bernard Crump, District 3 Constable James Lindsey and Superintendent of Education James Covington are all unopposed. Carpenter is the lone Republican unopposed incumbent. The rest are Democrats.
Primary elections are Aug. 2, with runoffs slated for Aug. 23. The general election is Nov. 8.
