Guest artist Dawn Lenore Sonntag, from Hiram College in Ohio, is visiting as an Artist in Residence today through Sunday in Starkville. During her stay, she will visit Starkville High School to speak to music students about being a singer, composer and music educator. She will also perform some of her own songs.
Sonntag will also give a master class for the collaborative piano class at Mississippi State University.
On Sunday, she will give a free recital, open to the public, at Starkville”s First Presbyterian Church, 307 University Dr., at 3 pm. Music selections will include her own compositions, as well as sacred music by Bach, Fauré and Handel. Karen Murphy will provide piano and organ accompaniment.
“It”s exciting to have such a talented artist and educator with us in Starkville and on the MSU campus,” said Murphy. “She is not only an excellent choral director and singer, but also a sought-after, commissioned composer held in high regard within the music profession.”
Sonntag has performed opera, oratorio and art song repertoire in Germany, France and Norway, as well as extensively throughout the U.S. She has appeared with several opera ensembles and been a soloist with numerous chamber and community choirs. She has specified that any donations made at Sunday”s concert will be given to Starkville”s Habitat for Humanity.
Sonntag”s visit is sponsored by the Starkville Area Arts Council.
