A 31-year-old woman was sent to the hospital in critical condition Thursday after she was allegedly stabbed five or more times by her live-in boyfriend in Lowndes County.
Nathaniel Bankhead, 45, allegedly stabbed his on-again, off-again girlfriend, Cora Williams, in the face, chest, arms and back during an argument at about 6:45 p.m. Thursday while at his father”s 332 E. Plum Street house off Lee Stokes Road near Highway 82.
Bankhead, whose description was broadcast soon after the alleged attack, turned himself in to deputies at about 7:30 a.m. Friday and was charged with aggravated assault with a weapon. His bond had not been set by 9 a.m. Friday.
As family members cleaned the blood-splattered walls and floors of the home an hour or so later, they told of the rocky relationship the two shared.
An escalating argument — one of many they”ve had — resulted in the stabbing, said Bankhead”s father, who was in another room at the time.
“They were always fighting when she was around,” he said. “I was out of the room and they were fighting again. Then I heard her screaming.”
Bankhead”s father initially called 911, after which Williams took the phone and told dispatchers that she had been stabbed 33 times, according to 911 broadcasts.
After taking Williams to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle, she was found to have at least five stab wounds. She had been transferred to another hospital, the name of which was not immediately available, by Friday morning.
