A woman who had been shot twice was found dead beside a Lowndes County road in the Steens area early today.
A passerby driving in the 1400 block of Jemison Mill Road called 911 after he spotted the woman”s body about 20 to 25 feet off the road shortly before 6:30 a.m., according to Lowndes County Sheriff”s Office Chief Deputy Greg Wright.
The woman”s identity was withheld pending notification of her Lowndes County family today, said County Coroner Greg Merchant.
Merchant declined to comment about her wounds or cause of death before finishing her autopsy today in Jackson.
Although the investigation is ongoing, Wright said the woman appears to have been shot at the location, which was isolated with no houses nearby except a hunting lodge.
No suspects were in custody by press time today, Wright said.
