Now that an escaped inmate is back in custody, the Clay County Sheriff”s Office is investigating how to make its jail more secure.
Amonty Young, 24, cut through one razor wire-topped outdoor fence and jumped another to escape June 17 during yard call. Young”s family returned him to the jail around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
CCSO Chief Deputy Eddie Scott said no additional charges have been pinned to Young as the department is more concerned with investigating his escape. Young was being held on a bench warrant for escape, uttering forgery and felony fleeing. Additional charges are expected, eventually.
On Wednesday, Det. Ramirez Williams interviewed Young to determine the details surrounding his escape, including how the fence was cut and any possible accomplices.
Scott said prisoners are entitled to yard call so there aren”t many more privileges that can be taken from Young, who has escaped in the past, to ensure he remains in custody.
“But we”ll make sure we keep a close eye on him when he”s outside,” said Scott.
Young will appear before a grand jury in October.
