A 35-year-old Columbus man was shot and killed by at least one masked man late Monday in his College Street home, according to police.
While witnesses disagreed about whether there were two suspects or just one, at least one man with a bandana over his faces entered 2018 1/2 College St. at 11:36 p.m. Monday and shot Eddie Terrell Bankhead in his upper body, said Police Public Information Officer Terrie Songer.
Officers arrived and found Bankhead outside in the passenger seat of a parked car.
Bankhead was taken in critical condition to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle, where he died during surgery. He was pronounced dead at 3:55 a.m.
The suspect or suspects fired two shots, including the one that hit Bankhead, but neither of the other two people in the house were injured.
One of those people was Rennie Gibbs, who received national attention after she was charged in 2006 when she was 16 with the depraved-heart murder of her unborn baby.
Gibbs miscarried after overdosing on cocaine, although it''s not clear whether her drug habit affected the baby.
Officers did find drugs, including cocaine, at the house Monday night.
Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant, said he didn''t have an exact count, but that the city and county were "getting close to 10 murders" just this year.
"It''s quite a number for us," he said.
As of press time this morning, no suspects had been identified.

i was told that Gibbs was going with him her brother goes with Meg niece or great-niece (i know she is in the family) the niece was in jail for about a week or so. some people is thinking it is odd that around 11:00 p. m. after Meg was shot the brother had enough money all of a sudden to go and bond the niece out

I read the comments about this murder and yes there are some concerns. First all yall need to get your facts rights before you start posting comments about people that dont have anything to do with this man murder. Yall dont know what went on and I dont either but its not right to talk about nobody else in this situation. What u mean what was Gibbs doing in the house you must wanted to be there. The question should have been why he had her in his house like she was doing some bad he is a grown man.The main concern should be why whoever came into this man house and shot him not focused on the Gibbs.Another thing is that the press seemed like they more focus on Gibbs than this man murder we dont need to be reminded of the past about something that happend years ago that dont have anything to do with this situation.

We buy our homes outside of the city limits for a reason. If we wanted in the city, we would have bought our house in the city. We want our kids to stay in country schools not change the last year of their school year. Leave us alone.
