For the fourth time in around two days, a house on Pierce Road caught fire Saturday night in Columbus.
Lowndes County District 3 Volunteer Fire Department responded to the most recent incident at around 10 p.m. Saturday. The original fire occurred Thursday at 5 p.m. as a grease fire on the stove. The house caught fire again Friday at 4 a.m. and again at 9 a.m.
According to Lizzie Jackson, who lived in the home, most of the house was still intact after the first fire, but the second fire destroyed it.
“We were able to go in the house,” Jackson, who is staying with family in Crawford, said. “The back of the house with the three bedrooms and two bathrooms were still intact. The front of the house with the living room was still intact. We went through the front door.
“The second time was when it destroyed the whole house. One of the neighbors was going to work and saw it from the bypass. He said he could see the whole ceiling engulfed in flames.”
Firefighter Wayne Doyle said the “hidden coals” under the rubble and foundation is the reason the house “re-ignites itself.”
“It”s hot spots that we couldn”t get to,” he said, noting the house is a total loss.
