Anthony Nelson will replace Selvain McQueen as the Democratic candidate for Lowndes County sheriff.
The Lowndes County Democratic Executive Committee named Nelson as the replacement Democratic nominee. Mcqueen, who won the August Democratic primary, withdrew from the race Thursday.
Nelson, Lowndes County Juvenile Detention Center administrator, also ran for the Democratic nomination.
The Democratic committee met Monday and Nelson attended. He accepted the nomination.
McQueen cited a potential Hatch Act violation as his reason for withdrawing from the race. The Hatch Act restricts certain political activities for federal employees and civil servants, including running in party elections.
McQueen”s potential violation of the Hatch Act came up due to his position as interim police chief for the city of Columbus.
