Columbus police are investigating another possible homicide that occurred late Thursday night on the 500 block of 27th St. N.
According to Interim Police Chief Selvain McQueen, the incident happened around 10:45 p.m. when a black male was shot and killed.
Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant identified the victim as William “Willie” Vaughn, 41, of Columbus.
According to Merchant, the incident happened outside the victim’s home.
“He died en route to the hospital,” Merchant said, noting Vaughn was shot multiple times.
Assistant Columbus Police Chief Joe Johnson said the victim died as a result of the gunshot wounds and police have no suspects at this time.
“We are working on leads and we are gathering information,” Johnson said.
Merchant said this morning that an autopsy had not been scheduled, but he believes it will take place in the next few days.
This is the third deadly incident to occur in Columbus in the past week.
A Columbus man was found dead at the 300 block of Eighth Street North in Columbus early Sunday morning after witnesses reported hearing gun shots.
Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant identified the victim as Tedd Thomas Wood, 35.
The body of 34-year-old Alfonso Lathan Jr. of Columbus was found Saturday morning at Luxapalila Creek.
A fisherman noticed the body around 10:15 a.m. near the boat landing at the Luxapalila Creek Recreation Area off Highway 69. Lathan appeared to have been shot, with a trail of evidence leading from a nearby bathroom to the river bank.
