Emergency response personnel responded to a one-vehicle wreck that occurred Tuesday afternoon on the Main Street exit ramp off Highway 82 East.
The wreck happened around 12:15 p.m. when the vehicle, a dark blue Dodge Ram Charger, turned off the right side of the exit ramp, knocked down a lightpost and highway signage, traveled down a slope along the exit road and ended entrenched in the trees alongside the highway.
Personnel had to remove shrubs and bushes to get the female driver out of the vehicle. Then she was carried up the slope and transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle.
The victim, Monique Whitfield, was nine months pregnant. A baby boy was delivered later that day at around 8:30 p.m. He weighs 6 pounds, 10 ounces and is 20 inches long. A nurse at BMH-GT said the baby was healthy.
Mississippi Highway Patrol is still investigating the incident. It was not known at press time what caused the accident to occur.
Whitfield was originally en route to BMH-GT due to lower back and stomach pains when the accident happened.
