Multiple gunshots were fired Friday afternoon near Trinity Personal Care Center, the Columbus Police Department said.
Residents report shots were fired between Cecil Street and a nearby apartment complex some time after 12:15 p.m. One witness told police five shots were heard, with three coming in one burst and two more coming after a brief pause.
According to CPD Lt. Wayne McLemore, a black male walked up to two vehicles parked near the apartments and began shooting into them. McLemore said both vehicles left and the shooter ran away.
Nearby Fairview Elementary School, located on the southside of Airline Road, was placed on lockdown for no more than 30 minutes.
“It’s just a precautionary measure,” Billie Smith, Fairview principal, said. “The shots were heard by a teacher and we went to lockdown until a consultant with our district resource officer cleared it.”
