A longtime local leader in the commercial solid waste industry is changing hands, but company officials say customers should see little to no change.
Mississippi Industrial Waste Disposal Inc., a locally owned Columbus business since 1971, was acquired by Waste Pro USA Inc. earlier in the month, but the company will retain its name, Phillip Crossley of MIWD said Wednesday afternoon.
The company will also retain the same office staff.
“That’s one of the things (we) liked,” Crossley said. “It was really a seamless change.”
Crossley said another thing that will not change is the company’s commitment to the communities in which it serves.
“Waste Pro is really big on giving back to communities they do business in, and one of the reasons they were able to purchase this company is people felt it would only better service levels because of their experience in the waste industry business,” Crossley said.
Waste Pro will take over all current MIWD contracts, including service to Columbus Air Force Base. The curbside recycling program will continue.
MIWD currently operates in seven counties in Mississippi and one in Alabama. The company employs 40 people, offering disposal, recycling, demolition and collection services for industrial and commercial waste.
Florida-based Waste Pro currently operates in seven southeastern states and serves more than 1.4 million customers. The MIWD acquisition expands the company’s Mississippi operations to five locations. The company provides service to customers in Columbus, Hattiesburg, Jackson, Meridian, Natchez, Vicksburg and along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
“Our growth in Mississippi is very intentional; provide great equipment and superior service to grow organically and by acquisition,” Waste Pro President and CEO John Jennings stated in a press release.
