STARKVILLE — Swift work by Starkville firefighters kept a garage blaze from damaging an entire home Sunday morning.
Station 3 of the Starkville Fire Department responded to 90 Leflore St. in the Rolling Hills subdivision off North Jackson Street at 8:11 a.m. Sunday after a neighbor called and alerted the three occupants that the garage was engulfed by flames.
When firefighters arrived, two cars in the garage were on fire; Michael Hollingshed and his family had escaped the house unharmed.
Firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the blaze and keep flames from damaging other parts of the home.
“They made a very good attack on the fire and had it under control in 10 minutes,” SFD Chief Rodger Mann said. “It’s uninhabitable right now because of heavy smoke damage, but it won’t be a total loss.”
Mann said fire department investigators are still trying to determine an exact cause of the fire, but they believe it was sparked by electricity.
“This time of year, we start seeing an increase in our runs due to heating fires,” Mann said. “More activities are about to start happening indoors, which increases chances of accidental fires occurring. We encourage everyone to check their smoke detector to make sure it’s in good working order, and also have safety exit plans.”
