Four sustain injuries during shooting at high school party

WEST POINT -- A shoving match turned into a shootout during a high school party in West Point, according to West Point police.

Friday at 11:20 p.m. at the American Legion Hall in West Point, four people were shot after a fight broke out at a West Point High School senior party, said West Point Police Department Detective Romelle Matthews.

"We had a social event going on, and a couple guys from Columbus came over and it got out of hand," said Matthews, lead investigator in the case. "We are in the process of an investigation now to apprehend the shooters."

The altercation began in the building and spilled outside, Matthews explained. Shortly thereafter, shots were fired into the crowd.

Police believe there might have been as many as two shooters firing.

The four victims'' names are not being released, because, said Matthews, they also are witnesses. Only one of the four victims sustained injuries severe enough to be taken to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, Matthews noted.

The victim was treated for a gunshot wound to the groin and has since been released. The other three, he said, were only grazed by the bullets. All the victims were between the ages of 17 and 18.

Matthews said there were approximately 100 people at the party.

Arrests are expected to be made as soon as today, said Matthews without revealing details on the suspects.

"Right now the investigation is still fresh, and we don''t want to release any information which might tip off the shooters," he said.

The party was not sponsored by the West Point School District.

Its getting like the Wild Wild West.Almost all kids carry a gun, they need to make them check them in at the door.

Now you know that the Columbus kids NEVER do any wrong. It's the same song! Whether it's New Hope, Starkville, West Lowndes and now West Point. It's never our kids fault. And as for gangs, I agree with most, we don't have gangs just "thugs" and "wannabe's". Let's give them special attention and take them to a luncheon with the mayor, oh and let's give them season passes to the games. yeah...that'll teach'em!

It is sad, but history does repeat itself. In the late 80's I went to High School parties and the kids fought with fists. Now if you look at someone the wrong way, they want to shoot you. My son was at the party, but he was on the inside when the shooting happened. He said that he was not interested in watching a fight, he was looking at the girls. These kids have too much free time and not enough responsibilities. We all want our kids to have the best of the best and to be accepted by others. In the real world, you do have enemies, and you have to learn how to deal with them instead of trying to kill them.

This wouldn't happen if more people carried guns.

This is your brain on Drugs! Im only 25 and back when i was a high school senior in 2002 the kids did nothing but fight now these kids are popping pills and they think their He- Man or Super- Man. Why risk your life by shooting someone trying to make you look cool don't you know these kids don't think before they shoot anyways if they were really killers they wouldn't do it in public anyway I hope the one's who did the shooting learn a valuable lesson

It all comes down to the parents of these kids. They let their kids run the streets, don't know where they are, don't spend any quality time with them and then they sit back and wonder why their kids end up on drugs or alcoholics at the age of 15.

EC I agree with you but after i saw the packet paper it shocked me because the boy who did the shooting actually come from a good home and he is also a good kid someone must have really made him mad because that is unlike him

Well!!! Well!!! Well!!! We got alot of opinions but no solutions. How can a person say someone is good and had to be made very mad enought to shoot into a crowd of kids!!! We have had serial killers that came from a good family!!! How would a good kid bring a gun to a party unless he was looking for trouble!!!! I have gotten mad alot of times in my 44 yrs and i have never even shot a gun, So what makes him special, not bashing him because i'm praying for the shooters as well as the ones that were shot and their parents. Lets join together in a group effort with prayer and action to help our youth while they r young a boy shooter becomes an adult killer. Lets get some counseling and prayer when we see tale-tale signs in our kids at a young age, Instead of ignoring the signs and thinking they will grow out of it. Love you all!!!AMEN
