STARKVILLE — Starkville police are investigating a Sunday morning shooting that sent one woman to the hospital.
At 1:50 a.m., officers responded the a call of shots fired at the B-Quik convenience store located at the corner of Montgomery Street and Highway 12.
A woman, whose name was not released by police, suffered minor injuries and was transported to OCH Regional Medical Center and later released.
Starkville Police Department Lt. Troy Outlaw said the woman was not injured by a bullet but likely from fragmentation from a ricochet.
Several cars were damaged, too.
Officers interviewed several people at the scene but have not identified a suspect or made arrests.
Outlaw didn’t know how many shots were fired.
Outlaw said the convenience store is a popular stop for partygoers who leave area bars at 1 a.m. He wouldn’t say exactly what caused the shots to be fired other than “tempers elevated and it ended up being shots fired.”
Starkville resident Hobie Hobart witnessed the altercation while turning off South Montgomery Street onto Highway 12. Hobart said the B-Quik parking lot was packed with vehicles before he heard three gun shots and saw one male running away from the incident while firing back toward the store.
“Before I could get my cellphone out to take a picture, the shots happened,” Hobart said. “As a resident, I’m pissed off about it. It’s ridiculous because the B-Quik could prevent something like this by not allowing all of those people to congregate in that parking lot. It’s like that every weekend. They need to get security at this place. They need to knock this out.”
