STARKVILLE — Starkville’s largest voting precinct was key in a pair of county races won by Republican candidates.
Republican Glenn Hamilton won the circuit clerk race over Teresa Davis-Roberson by 1,062 votes. Hamilton won 11 of the 21 precincts but needed the South Starkville precinct — which had Starkville’s highest turnout with more than 2,000 votes cast — to clinch the race. Hamilton earned 1,421 votes to Davis-Roberson’s 651.
The official precinct-by-precinct figures were released Monday by Oktibbeha County Circuit Clerk Angie McGinnis.
The South Starkville area was an instrumental precinct for Tax Assessor-elect Allen Morgan, who earned 1,531 votes to Democrat Velisia Wynn’s 556. Morgan won the tax assessor race by 2,119 votes.
South Starkville is densely populated with Republican voters, however, several county races saw Democrats earn the lion’s share of the votes in the region. Incumbent Coroner Michael Hunt earned 300 votes more than Republican Billy Miller, while 16th District Attorney Forrest Allgood retained his office by earning 399 more than Republican Steven Wallace. Allgood and Hunt each won by more than 3,000 votes.
