‘Idol’ star coming to Columbus

Dispatch Staff Reports

Two nationally known musical artists will be performing in the Friendly City Memorial Day weekend.

"American Idol" winner Fantasia Barrino and R&B artist Tank will headline a show May 24 at the Columbus Fairgrounds. The show will begin at 7:15 p.m. and will feature the two artists and several local modeling students, said event organizer Vanessa Carter.

Advance tickets to the concert are $25, and are available at Bryan''s Records and Pets in Columbus, Gibson''s Barber and Beauty College in West Point, A&A Fashions in Brooksville and Album Alley and McKinney''s Hair Fashions in Tupelo. Tickets also will be available at the event for $30.

Barrino won the third season "American Idol" contest in 2004. She has been nominated for eight Grammy awards, and played Celie in the Broadway adaptation of "The Color Purple."

Tank, born Durrell Babbs, is a Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and producer.

"We invited her to come, and she agreed," Carter said of Fantasia. "Plus, anyone who goes through the Reflections Modeling Agency classes this weekend and next weekend will get to be a part of the show."

The modeling classes will be held today and May 22 from 5-9 p.m. and Saturday and May 23 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and will be held to celebrate the upcoming establishment of a branch of the Memphis, Tenn.-based Reflections Modeling Agency in Columbus. The classes cost $100 total.

I am very excited that someone of this magnitude will be in the Columbus area. I'm sure this will be a GREAT show. My friends and I are traveling all the way from Hattiesburg to assure that we do not miss out on the fun!

If she is so great then how come you rarely hear anything about her. I'm sorry but Fantasia CAN'T sing!!!!!!!!!!!

Just wanted to respond and say I'm NOT a hater. I was only voicing my opinion that I do not care for her type of music and I don't think she can sing well. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and if you want to spend money to hear her sing...go ahead.. I don't care for Adam Lambert's type of music, but I have to admit that he CAN sing. I give kudos to those who can sing and sing well...and she's just not one I give kudos to.

If you don't acknowledge her talent, regardless of whether or not it's what you prefer, then you ARE a hater. Period. I can't stand Beyonce, but I'm not about to say she can't sing just because I don't like her voice.

So Nicole that makes you a hater too right? I mean after all you don't like Beyonce and if you can't acknowledge her talent then you are a HATER!!!!!!!!

Article Comment Krista commented at 5/19/2009 10:43:00 PM:

I don't think she has any talent. In my opinion, she can't sing. I remember in one song she sang on Idol "Let's Give Them Something To Talk About" and she slurred her words. You couldn't even understand what she was singing. I'm not a HATER of her as a person. Every person deserves to be loved for who they are...I just don't care for her singing or her voice.

Adam can not sing. He is an entertainer and that is it. Danny is a singer. As for Fantasia, she is a singer. Just because she messed up one song does not mean she does not have talent.

mlr...that is funny, maybe you are not reading the right magazines or watching the right shows. You only hear about stars when they are in trouble, Fantasia has never been in trouble, so that is why you think you have never heard anything about her.
