An Oktibbeha County man is in custody in connection with a Starkville shooting after a seven-hour search that ended Monday when he turned himself in.
Kewon Doss surrendered to the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office shortly before 10 p.m. Monday.
Doss, 18, is a suspect in a Monday shooting that killed his uncle, 38-year-old Larry Davis, at their home at 1816 Stowood Road. Doss fled the home after the shooting.
Paramedics received a call of shots fired with injuries at 2:22 p.m. and later pronounced Davis dead at the scene. Oktibbeha County Coroner Michael Hunt said Davis suffered a single gunshot wound to the torso.
Doss initially fled to the Willie Road area just off Rockhill Road. According to a news release, Doss was believed to be carrying a 9 mm handgun and possibly a shotgun of an unknown type.
Chief Deputy Chadd Garnett said he’s unsure what sparked an altercation between Doss and Davis.
Charges are pending, and bail hasn’t been set.
Doss has both felony and misdemeanor convictions, but Garnett is unsure of specific charges without going through circuit court documents.
Doss didn’t have warrants pending at the time of the incident.
Garnett said no witnesses saw the shooting, and he is unsure who made the 911 call.
“The family is assisting in finding him,” Garnett said before Doss turned himself in.
Garnett thanked the Starkville Police Department, Mississippi State University Police Department and Oktibbeha County Volunteer Fire Department for assisting with the search.
