Of 40,721 registered voters, 7,492 — or 18.4 percent –Lowndes Countians cast ballots at the polls in Tuesday’s primary election.
Circuit Clerk officials noted the voter turnout was “very light,” at 3.1 percent, in the Democratic primary, compared to past primary elections. Of Republicans, 15.3 percent voted in Tuesday’s primary.
“It’s really about what we expected,” Lowndes Circuit Clerk Haley Salazar said this morning. “We actually voted a few more yesterday, than in the beginning we thought we might. The activity picked up a little bit.
“It went very, very well. We sent out 75 percent of our machines, because you’re dealing with the unknown and you want to be prepared for the voters,” she added. “It went very smoothly, everybody was in and out. The poll workers did a great job. We got everything processed last night.”
Of 24,714 registered voters in Oktibbeha County, 4,671 — or 18.9 percent — cast ballots at the polls in the primary election.
“It was kind of slow,” Oktibbeha County Circuit Clerk Glenn Hamilton said of voter turnout. “Being my first election, I was hoping for a better turnout, but I’m not surprised by the outcome.”
In the presidential race, Newt Gingrich won Lowndes County, with 2,064 votes — or 33.26 percent. He was trailed by Mitt Romney, who received 2,015 votes or 32.47 percent.
Mitt Romney won Oktibbeha County with 1,221 votes or 35.18 percent.
