In honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day observed across the world, the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library will host several events Monday, April 16, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the meeting room of the Chebie G. Bateman building at 314 Seventh St. N.
This year’s theme is “Choosing to Act: Stories of Rescue.” In keeping with this theme, the library’s events will include a naming ceremony, a poem and a presentation.
The naming ceremony will include students from West Lowndes Middle School, who will read the names, ages, professions, and places of death of only 20 out of the 6 million Holocaust victims. While reading the names, students will snuff out a candle for each of the names read.
Also, the poem “Holocaust,” by Barbara Sonek, will be read by a local student. Sonek is an art teacher, poet and painter in the New York City area.
Completing the evening’s events will be a presentation by DeShana McLemore, a history teacher at West Lowndes Middle School.
McLemore will tell the story of two Holocaust survivors, Henry Galler and Eva Vogul, and share their journey of life before and during World War II, starting in their hometown of Oleszyce, Poland.
