A 17-year-old with a history of traffic violations may soon be in trouble again for high-speed hijinks in downtown Caledonia Sunday night.
The juvenile was spotted in the cul-de-sac on Ora Lane, around 9:30 p.m., “making doughnuts” with his red and white-striped 2006 Mustang, Town Marshal Ben Kilgore said Tuesday morning.
A local resident jumped in his truck and chased the driver, who switched off his headlights and raced down Main Street, Kilgore said. Eventually, the juvenile stopped at the Ole Country Store on Highway 12 E.
The resident who chased the juvenile was advised by 911 dispatchers not to leave his truck or approach the driver. Kilgore said Caledonia Deputy Marshal Carl Griffin was the first officer on the scene; then two sheriff’s deputies arrived to assist.
But because the driver was stopped when Griffin and the deputies arrived, and because no law enforcement officers witnessed the driver breaking the law, Kilgore said they were unable to issue a citation, unless the resident who pursued the juvenile files an affidavit.
The teenager has received several tickets for traffic violations and has served in the town’s work program twice to pay his fines.
“The way this kid drives, he’s going to injure someone one day,” Kilgore said. “But we’re the bad guys. We’re not picking on this kid. He draws attention to himself.”
The 17-year-old, who authorities would not name because he is a minor, will face Lowndes County Justice Court Judge Peggy Phillips in Caledonia Tuesday night for a previous charge of violating the town’s noise ordinance.
