The Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science has been named one of the best high schools in America.
In a list released earlier this week, national news publications Newsweek and The Daily Beast released the names of the top 1,000 high schools in the country. Ranked at 542, MSMS was the only school in Mississippi included on the list.
“We are thankful to the taxpayers of Mississippi for providing this opportunity for the academically talented students of Mississippi,” said MSMS Executive Director Charles Brown. “When a community of hard working students is paired with excellent faculty that has high expectations success is guaranteed.”
According to Newsweek and The Daily Beast, the list of the top schools was compiled by researching 15,000 American high schools and comparing graduation rates, average test scores on national standardized tests (SAT and ACT), college preparedness and the number of advanced courses made available to students.
MSMS has a graduation rate at or near 100% and a college matriculation rate at or near 100% each year. The Newsweek rankings also show MSMS students have an average ACT score of 27.3, above the national average of 21 and the state average of 18.8, and an average SAT score of 1829.
Soon to graduate, the 117 students of the MSMS Class of 2012 have already been offered more than $12.3 million in scholarships to schools all over the nation.
“Most of our students will continue their education in Mississippi,” said MSMS Admissions Counselor Wade Leonard. “But we do have several each year, who are go on to schools like Yale, Stanford and the United States Air Force Academy.”
