German Terell Smith, son of Columbus Mayor Robert Smith, was arrested Saturday night, by officers with the Mississippi Highway Patrol, at Highway 182 and Ninth Street and charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. He was transported to the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center.
Smith, 23, of 26 Subdivision Road, has not posted bond. His initial court appearance is scheduled for June 26. If convicted, he could face 10 years in prison.
Smith’s brother, Sherman, in April pled guilty to the misdemeanor charge of carrying a concealed weapon, for which he was fined $450 by Judge Nicole Clinkscales. Sherman Smith was arrested Feb. 26 by Columbus Police Officer Joshua Vandiver after police responded to reports of a shooting at the Columbus Fairgrounds. Smith was not implicated or charged in connection with the alleged shooting. He initially was charged with providing false information to an officer — he told police his name was German Smith — but Clinkscales retired the charge to the files, which means the charge was dismissed without prejudice, and the case could be retried if Sherman Smith is charged with committing the same offense.
Mayor Robert Smith could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
