The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), announced that the Golden Triangle Regional Solid Waste Management Authority was awarded the SWANA Gold Excellence Award in Landfill Gas Utilization. The award will be presented at SWANA’s annual national conference, WASTECON, on August 14 in Washington, D.C.
Golden Triangle Regional Solid Waste Management Authority was presented SWANA’s Excellence Award for the success of its landfill gas collection, destruction and electricity generation project.
The Authority owns and operates a Subtitle D landfill facility for the disposal of non-hazardous commercial, industrial and residential solid waste generated within the region. It is the only publicly owned and publicly operated regional Authority landfill in the State.
The Landfill is situated on 667 acres on the Oktibbeha-Clay County line northeast of Starkville. The landfill gas collection system covers approximately 12 acres of garbage, 30 to 100 feet deep that is covered by 3 feet of compacted earth overboard. As the garbage decomposes, it generates landfill gas, mostly methane and carbon dioxide.
