The Mississippi Forestry Commission has issued a burn ban for Lowndes County at the request of the board of supervisors. The ban was initiated Tuesday around 3:30 p.m. It will last through July 31, but it can be lifted if there is significant rainfall.
“We decided with the dry conditions and hot weather to put in a request for a burn ban to the Forestry Commission,” Lowndes County Fire Administrator Sammy Fondren said. “It’s a big ordeal to get one signed. All of the supervisors are signed off on this request.”
Fondren said the burn band does not include fireworks.
“It’s illegal to shoot them in the city,” Fondren said. “But this ban doesn’t extend to fireworks or firework shows in the county.”
Thirty counties currently have implemented a ban on burning, including Monroe and Clay counties.
A current list of counties prohibiting burning can be found Here.
